Today we have a little treat for the blog. A guest post written by my daddy! He went on a business trip to Hawaii (I know… rough!) and brought back some gorgeous photos that he wanted to share. So grab your ukulele and a glass of pineapple juice and let the following post warm your bones during this dreary, bitter cold time of year.
After my hike today, I couldn’t help but look for a venue to share a few pictures. And Dew-drop popped into my mind. That’s been my nickname for Destiny since she was the size of a dew-drop. I hope these pictures don’t cast any dispersions on Wenzel Photography. All I had was a Kodak Instamatic from 1969, so don’t blame her for poor picture quality.
Most hikes don’t have a pot of gold at the end, but this one did. It may have been the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen. The sights of paradise, the sound of 12 foot waves pounding the rocks, the smells of a tropical rainforest, the feel of perfect weather — pictures can’t capture it. I started at one beach, hiked upwards along the Na Pali’ coast for a couple of miles and ended up at another beach. Jurassic Park, King Kong and Bali Hai were filmed here. Backpacker Magazine lists the trail as one of America’s 10 most dangerous hikes. The destination was Hanakapi’ai Beach.
All was wonderful, except for one couple I heard arguing along the trail. Kauai is an island full of honeymooners, but this bride had had just about enough and seemed to be marching toward the nearest divorce attorney. It looked like your typical 1st fight: Stradivarius marries Gorilla. Gorilla is oblivious that Stradivarius is a delicate instrument. Stradivarius calls home to mom and says, “I married a Gorilla!” Mom says, “Be patient, 35 years of marriage will change him.”
It was a glorious day in paradise.
